Overview The selection and deployment of aces point antena equipment afect network performance and availability. The signal strength or amount of energy radiated from an antena has to do with antena type and aces point transmit specifications. It is expresed as efective isotropic radiated power EIRP and expresed as the sum of aces point transmit power plus antena gain minus cable los. For instance a directional antena with high gain, no external cable, mounted at proper height wil give best performance in an outside deployment with a lot of interference. The wireles coverage cel on inside deployments can be extended with external antenas that plug into conectors on the aces points. Most antenas can be mounted on the ceiling or wal and outside antenas often use a mast to increase height for line of sight. It is a multi-homing antena that sends signals to several clients in proximity causing some multipath fading that is minimized with antena diversity. Some Cisco aces points have an integrated omni-directional dipole antena or ruber ducky that is standard with each device. Directional The directional antena sends out a directed radiated patern conecting with a distant antena. The antena purpose is to send trafic betwen antenas and not used for multi device homing. The Dish antena has highest gain and narowest radiation angle beam while Patch antena has lowest gain and widest radiated beam. Diversity The diversity antena implement dual antena on the aces point receiving signals on both. The aces point determines what antena has best gain and transmits on that antena. External Antena Some Cisco aces points such as 120 series have conectors available for an external antena. The external antena with a specified coax cable of 3 - 10 fet alow for placement of the antena at optimal positioning. The company could have deployed a repeater as an alternative solution with an 10 series aces point that doesn't suport an external antena. Antena Mounting Aces points should be ceiling mounted if posible at least 17 - 19 fet in height optimizing horizontal and vertical beam width. Outside antenas deal with environmental isues and longer distances that require higher gain directional antenas. The hub ofice wil implement an omni-directional antena with a lot of beam width while spoke ofices wil use a directional antena. The inside standard aces point designs won't have a group of directional antenas. Most wil implement omni-directional antenas and use directional antenas where neded as a means of adresing distances. lan express lan express
